ONLINE REVIEWS: SHARON DOLIN AND BASIL KING
Eileen Tabios's review of Sharon Dolin's SERIOUS PINK is now available at Jacket's website. It will be out when Jacket releases its issue no. 24, but is currently accessible at http://jacketmagazine.com/24/tabi-dolin.html. Here's an excerpt:
Ekphrasis, as Dolin exemplifies, is not about verbalizing an intention (including an image). It’s about letting something else begin an experience or revelation that the poet might not otherwise experience or know. But Dolin doesn’t keep the experiences solipsistic — her poems use a lot of ‘you’ for a reason....// Ultimately, Dolin doesn’t make the mistake made by other poets writing from the inspiration of paintings — the inevitably doomed task of attempting to textually mimic another art work. Her ekphrastic process begins with the paintings, but the paintings appropriately are left behind in order to allow the poems to become their own entities: poems.
Eileen also did a blog review of Basil King's MIRAGE in a December 4, 2004 post at her blog, Chatelaine Poetics.

Basil King and Martha King in print here and there!
Two Marsh Hawk authors can be found in Shuffle Boil, #4, Fall 2003, writing about composer Stefan Wolpe. See "A frame for Stefan" by Martha, and "Basil King on Stefan Wolpe", along with two terrific Clemens Kalisher photos of Stefan at Black Mountain College.
If you don't know Shuffle Boil, it's an eclectic magazine of poets and music, with music ranging from jazz and blues and folk to 20th century concert music, and world music and on...in fact, if it's to be heard Shuffle Boil perks up. Brilliant editing by poets Steve Dickison and David Meltzer in San Francisco. Go to www.spdbooks.org if it isn't in your favorite indebookstore. Just $12 for three issues. More information is available online at http://www.bigbridge.org/musicshuffle.htm.
Martha King's "I Wanted to Vote" is in the fall 2003 issue of New York Stories--another piece of her 1960s memoir -- billed here as "essay" because it is a sort of answer to the 'why should you bother to vote' sense so many of us citizens have. This magazine might be in a local bookstore...or go to www.newyorkstories.org for samples and subscription info.
