The messages I listened for in my young life with its profound early losses were oracular, something to quiet a sometimes explosive desperation. I recall sitting on a winter’s day in my tenement apartment on Avenue B, sans heat or hot water, and maybe some chicken-hearts in the fridge, concerned about what the future might hold. I asked the Ouija to tell me what to do. Its reply rings as true to me today as it did back then:
