As the rosary is a meditation on the decades and their mysteries, the mysteries of The Thorn Rosary involve more than a decade’s worth of meditations and engagements with language, form, culture, reason and human experience. Underlying both is a “purity of intention”. Without romantically idealizing a post-colonial Philippines or the concerns of immigrant communities in a postmodern, multicultural society, Tabios redefines the word “Balikbayan”(3).
I am called “Balikbayan” because the girl in me is a country of rope hammocks and waling-waling orchids—a land with irresistible gravity because, in it, I forget the world’s magnificent indifference.(4)

Lenore Skenazy writes a syndicated column that appears in more than 100 papers and takes a skeptical look at a culture that has brought us bottled water for dogs, pole dancing for grannies and an S.A.T. vocabulary shower curtain for kids. A big city newspaper vet (New York Daily News, New York Sun), she has also written for everyone from Reader’s Digest to The Washington Post to Mad Magazine -- yes, Mad -- and co-authored The Dysfunctional Family Christmas Songbook and the quiz/joke book, Who’s The Blonde That Married What’s-His-Name?. Before that, she spent several years on TV as a (younger, cuter) Andy Rooney, at CNBC and the Food Network. After she wrote about letting her 9-year-old take the subway alone, she found herself on The Today Show, Dr. Phil, The View – and then on media around the world -- defending herself against charges she’s “America’s Worst Mom.” (But Google that and there she is, 11 million times.) She launched the blog “Free Range Kids” to explain her parenting philosophy and went on to write the book Free-Range Kids. She has lectured about “Free-Range Kids” here and abroad, from community centers to Yale University. Skenazy lives in New York City with her husband and two sons, who are not quite as Free-Range as she’d like, but she’s working on it. (And it helps that her older son just lost his iPod Touch, so now he has to come up with something else to do besides just sitting there, staring at it.) One thing she understands: It’s tough to be a perfect parent.
During the 1980s, Martha King edited the 8-page zine, Giants Play Well in the Drizzle, which she sent free to interested readers. She also briefly produced Northern Lights/International Poetry/Brooklyn Series and SpotS poetry chaplets. She worked in mainstream book publishing, for nonprofit literary organizations (most notably Poets & Writers), and later as an editor and writer for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She currently edits a prize-winning quarterly magazine for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. North & South, her collection of short stories and one of her 10 books of prose or poetry, was published in 2006. Her work has been widely published and anthologized, and she is a member of the Marsh Hawk Press collective. She is currently at work on a long memoir, with the provisional title Outside Inside. Chapters from this work have been published in Bombay Gin and New York Stories. King was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended Black Mountain College briefly as a teenager in the 1950s, and married the painter Basil King in San Francisco. She began writing after the birth of their two daughters, Mallory and Hetty, in the late 1960s.
The reading takes place in the welcoming backroom of the Sidewalk Café, famed for really great hamburgers, plus vegetarian fare and all beverages.

She has also won a Gold Key in this year's Scholastic Awards for her poetry and prose.
Phillip Lopate is the author of over a dozen books, including Being With Children, Bachelorhood, Portrait of My Body, Waterfront, The Rug Merchant, Two Marriages and Notes on Sontag. He will be reading from and discussing his most recent publication, At the End of the Day: Selected Poems.
